Roll No. : 14

When: July?

Where: Mark's living room.

What I Remember: A normal, chill night at Mark's. There's rarely ever a time where we hang out at Mark's house without someone playing the piano. This photo is almost identical to a photo I took of Sergio and Matt playing it a few years ago.

Roll No. : 20

When: August 27 or 28.

Where: Manhattan.

What I Remember: This was taken while we were waiting for Sergio to finish eating. Owen more or less is the perfect travel partner; if he hadn't been on the trip, I may very well have murdered Sergio in New York. He was always in good spirits, never complained and would actually close the hotel door room behind him. This is a great visual example of how good of a mood Owen pretty much was throughout the trip.

Roll No. : 11

When: March-ish.

Where: Seneca College cafeteria.

What I Remember: I dated Ani for two months. If you asked me what I thought of the relationship, I wouldn't have too many nice things to say about her or the time I spent with her. I took a few photos of her when we were still together and just like the project was supposed to happen, I completely forgot about them. It was nice to see them, though; it reminds me that there were still good days.

Roll No. : 16

When: Same day as photo 7, which in turn is on the same day as photo 5.

Where: Same spot.

What I Remember: The cutest couples photo I've ever taken.

15

Roll No. : 17

When: August 1.

Where: My garage.

What I Remember: I had wanted to attempt to take yet another series of photos featuring my friends, and the easiest way was to lure them all to my place with a supposed party. Haleigh was having her birthday party that day as well. I decided to just have my thing earlier in the afternoon, so people (myself included) could still make it to Haleigh's later on. Some people still treated both things as two mutually exclusive things; either you went to hers or you went to mine, so only JP, Sergio, Michelle and Owen showed up. Which was just as well; it was overcast, and I needed sunlight for the photos. Surprisingly, this one of JP still turned out fantastic. It is, hands down, my favorite photo of him. He's not crazy about being in photos and usually either turns away or blocks his face, so I'm really glad he didn't this time.

Roll No. : 3

When: May? June? July? Your guess is as good as mine.

Where: Some back alley downtown.

What I Remember: I've spent countless hours with Mark over the years just walking down alleys and various other sketchy spots just to look at graffiti. This was another one of those days. Not that I ever mind; not too many other people talk about their interests with as much enthusiasm as he does. We met up downtown and then just started walking until we reached a dead end; the wall you see behind Mark. Mark was reaching for the camera in his bag when he saw me pointing mine at him and made that fist. One of my all time favorite photos of him.

Roll No. : 2

When: Halfway through November.

Where: My basement.

What I Remember: I had an idea for a stencil a few months prior and decided to finally try it out. I realized I would most likely give it away like I do with all my stencils, so I decided I would just give it to Mark. I asked Melissa to help me model for it. The plan was to make a stencil of only the black lines; that, the way the straight lines bend when projected on her body, you would be able to tell it was a person. I used a digital SLR for the shots, but decided to take a few shots with my SLR because it looked cool and felt like something worth getting on film.
As for the stencil, I still haven't started it.

Roll No. : 19

When: Canada Day, again.

Where: Thomson Park, again.

What I Remember: Like I said before, everyone was in a great mood and having fun. And this photo couldn't reflect it any better. I have a ton of great photos from that day; I'll get around to showing them eventually.

Roll No. : 8

When: April or May.

Where: Outside Moonbean, Kensington Market.

What I Remember: I used to hang out with May pretty regularly the summer before, but it pretty much stopped completely due to school and work for both of us. This was the first time I hung out with her again. It says a lot about how far behind we were with each others' lives; May had moved to the Kensington area and I had no idea. We got to Moonbean and played catch-up with each other. I took photos as we talked; I took 3 before she got annoyed and told me to stop. I had told her about how I hadn't seen some people in a long time because I got sick of being the only one to make the effort to keep in touch. So when we went our own ways afterward, I made sure to tell her "Call me". I must have repeated it enough times that I sounded mildly retarded.

Roll No. : 13

When: Halloween.

Where: Eugenie & Co.'s house, Kensington area.

What I Remember: For reasons I won't get into, I don't remember much about Halloween. I didn't even remember that I got wasted until I saw photos from that night; large chunks of the night resurfaced in my memory after seeing them. Mark and I were talking about the basement of the house and how I had never been down there. "Oh man! You gotta go! It's awesome down there! Let's go now!". He was right; in the basement is a shelf full of...stuff. I'm not even sure how to describe some of the stuff. A lot of baby food jars filled with tiny little hardware with a bunch of other random stuff tossed in. It doesn't belong to anyone in the house; it was there when all the girls moved in. It either belongs to the previous occupants or the landlord. Either way, it just remains there, like some sort of strange art exhibit for people to pass by on their way to the washroom when the upstairs one is occupied.

Roll No. : 1

When: Good Friday, one of the first warm days of the year.

Where: Trinity Bellwoods.

What I Remember: That's Heather and her boyfriend Brandon. I'm really horrible with names, so even though Brandon had introduced himself to me, I had forgotten his name, sort of. I kept thinking "His name's Brandon...isn't it?". When I left, I said bye to each person individually. When I got to Brandon, I wanted to make sure I didn't get his name wrong, so I said "Sorry, I forgot your name" and stuck my hand out to shake his, which apparently is a real dick move, even if I did have good intentions. He didn't seem too offended.
On the way home, I received a text message from a number I didn't recognize. It read: "I like how you asked heathers bf what his name was at the end of the day". When I asked who it was, the reply was: "You dick! It's me, Heather's boyfriend. Nice meeting you too, asshole!". It was Audrey, who witnessed the whole thing. And no, I didn't believe it was really Brandon, but she did succeed in making me feel really guilty about the whole thing.

Roll No. : 10

When: Canada Day.

Where: Thomson Park.

What I Remember: A last minute get together organized by Michelle. There was a lot of miscommunication between Michelle and I, sending all of us into a lot of confusion as to which park we were all supposed to meet up at. Mix-up aside, it was a great day; the weather was perfect and everyone was in a good mood. That's Matt jamming on his bass; it was the first time I'd seen it. I think he'd just gotten it recently. I don't think there is a single bad thing about that day.

Roll No. : 16

When: Same day as Michelle's 'Take A Bath' shot.

Where: Sergio's neighborhood, near Warden Station.

What I Remember: Hanging out with Sergio and his wife, Kathy, after I hung out with Michelle. Sergio told me he knew a great spot for photos on the edge of his neighborhood; a grassy hill with a great view. He, Kathy and I took their dogs for a walk to the spot after dinner. The sun was setting, so it made for great lighting. All the shots I took of them that evening turned out great. This is one of my favorite photos I've ever taken of them; this captures them way better than any wedding photo I ever took for them. I wish Kathy wasn't blurry, but there's only so much I can do with dim lighting. I still love it anyway. I'll post some of the other ones another day.

Roll No. : 17

When: July.

Where: Either my driveway or outside Mark's house.

What I Remember: This is cheating a bit, because I didn't really take the photo, obviously. I got a slightly-less-than-satisfactory haircut one day, and as soon as I got home, I tried to fix it a bit with an electric razor. For the most part, it looked okay, until my hand slipped. I didn't think it was too big of a deal. Later that day, Sergio came over to see me in the afternoon. It says a lot about how noticeable my screw up was, because when he arrived, he rolled down the window of his truck, stuck his head out and yelled "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR?!?". And this was while his truck was still rolling up to my house; he wasn't even on the driveway yet. It was that noticeable. He later took this photo, with me pointing at my little bald patch.

Roll No. : 16

When: I'm gonna say...July.

Where: Somewhere along Spadina.

What I Remember: We all knew it; it's just that none of us wanted to say it to Michelle. Kidding. Michelle and I checked out the 'Friends With You' installation at Queen's Park one afternoon, then started heading home. We came across this outside a shop, so I made Michelle pose for it. Thanks for being a good sport, Michelle.

Roll No. : 15

When: August? July? I just remember it was hot that day.

Where: Near Brimley and Sheppard.

What I Remember: The day started out with Mark, Melissa and I hanging out on the train tracks. After an hour or two, Sergio and JP joined us and we all started to leave to grab some dinner. Mark realized he dropped his phone somewhere, which created a problem, because he could have dropped it anywhere along the path we'd walked, which was a pretty long path. After a lengthy search, we found it but as we found it, a train came along. Did I mention the tracks are still active? Either the train operators don't care or they know they can't stop the train just to give you hell for being on the tracks. We all got out of the way, but JP decided to play chicken with it, despite all of us yelling at him to get off the tracks. The train was going relatively slow, but it was still pretty frightening. As the train passed him, the operator got out of the cabin and threw water out of a bottle at him. Then he threw the bottle. The passing train was blocking our exit path, so we had to wait for it to pass. JP figured he hadn't given us enough of a scare, so he sat right next to the tracks and kept sticking his hand as near as possible to the train, which is when I took this photo. I've never been so scared for his safety.

Roll No. : 9

When: New Years Day, 2010.

Where: Eugenie & Co.'s house, Kensington Market.

What I Remember: Frankly, I don't remember anything that night; I was really drunk and ended my night by throwing up shortly before passing out. There are two photos that I took when the clock struck 12, and from the sequence of photos, this was almost right afterward. It's Mark hugging Eugenie. The most heartfelt hug I've ever caught. The majority of the indoor photos I took that night came out too dark, so I'm incredibly happy that this one at least turned out. Probably the best photo from that night.

Roll No. : 5

When: Somewhere between August 26-29.

Where: Manhattan, New York City.

What I Remember: Owen, Sergio and I came across a party-supply store while wandering around Manhattan. In the basement was a costume store. We must have spent an hour in there, the place was so huge. We tried on mask after mask. There was only one guy working there, and even though I was worried he'd tell us to stop goofing around or tell me photos weren't allowed, he seemed like he was on a permanent lunch break. Sergio came across a Batman cowl that fit him perfectly. I don't know if this applies to anyone else, but Batman cowls that are of decent quality and fit perfectly are a rare find, so all three of us were kind of fanning out at how great it was. Sergio grabbed the robe of a nearby Hellraiser mannequin and posed for this photo. Owen and I tried our hardest to convince Sergio to buy it ($35 American), but because of a rip in the back, he was hesitant. Even after the guy offered to reduce it to $15 for the defect. Shortly afterward, Sergio came to regret his decision.

Roll No. : 3*

When: May, June or July. Maybe.

Where: Midland and Sheppard.

What I Remember: One of my days off, probably a Friday. This was one of the first times Mark and I started hanging out regularly in the summer. I showed up to meet him and was (pleasantly) surprised to see Britt there as well. We wandered around that area quite a bit that day to take photos. This was one of the first shots in the roll. I just really like the goofiness of the picture and how they're in focus with the background blurry. I remember we also had a conversation about the house behind them; what it used to be and how we should all chip in to buy it and make it the Souse House.

*this denotes the order in which they were developed, not the order in which I took the roll.

The Concept

In 2009, I was inspired by Patrick O' Dell, upon visiting his website/photoblog, Epicly Later'd. On a few occasions, he discovered misplaced rolls of film, which he would develop and post the photos of. I liked the idea of disorientation; trying to piece together the context of the photos and the stories behind them, as well as the enjoyment of simply remembering something forgotten. How much could be remembered from these photos?

I decided to do the same thing as Patrick, only intentionally. Rather than take one or two rolls and purposely forget them, I figured, why not go further? Why not take photos for an entire year and not develop them? So I set out to take as many photos as I could in 2010. None of them would be developed until 2011. I would place all the rolls of film in a bag, then when the time came, I would develop them, roll by roll, in random order.

I undertook this project with my friend Mark; by having two photographers, you'd be following two different lives that on occasion intertwine, which can be seen in the photos. At the moment, we're trying to figure how to present our results as a unit. Until then, this blog is just a small showcase for a few of my favorite photos.
